Rikugien Garden By Night – Tokyo – 六義園 – 4K Ultra HD

It seems that Tokyo comes with an endless list of parks to visit, and to be fair we have yet to finish covering them all. Among them you may stumble upon Rikugien, another gorgeous park close to Ikebukuro. What’s interesting here is that Rikugien is a beautiful garden to visit all year long, offering an unforgettable view each time. For those of you fortunate enough to be visiting Japan in December, you will be glad to know that the park is also open for a few weeks at night!

Build around 1700 for the 5th Tokugawa Shogun, Rikugien is another good example of the park design from the Edo Period and comes with a story of its own! Rikugien literally means : The ‘six poems garden’ and here you can see reproductions, in miniature, of 88 scenes from famous Japanese poems!

PS. To better capture the “essence” of this garden at night we decided to shoot this entire video in time-lapse. We hope you will enjoy this 4K video as much as the others.

Like Roppongi Hills (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q8rbO9__8N8&list=UUAxMEpfzdJ2dkrplSWehgcA), Tokyo Midtown is another very famous urban center that includes a residential section, business offices, a huge shopping mall, a luxury hotel and other leisure areas. Completed in 2007 Midtown is popular among Japanese for its park as well as its many seasonal activities including a beer festa, the Sakura Sparkle Lounge event, the Art Night, a month-long outdoor Ice Rink and several night illuminations as you can see in today’s video.

Rest assured that we will soon publish another video of Tokyo Midtown, this time during the day, in a few months in order to better enjoy this very interesting area.

Nezu-Jinja Shrine – Tokyo – 根津神社 – 4K Ultra HD

Another gorgeous temple hidden in plain sight! According to the temple’s history, the Nezu Temple or Nezu-Jinha Shrine was founded 1900 years ago by the legendary priest Yamato Takeru no Mikoto in Sendagi (Near Nippori). It was only during the Edo era that the temple was relocated to its current location. Like the Toshogu Shrine in Ueno (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L8h_eaMjGis), the Nezu-Jinja Shrine is styled after Nikko’s Toshogu Shrine also known as Gongen or Ishinoma-zukuri, style. But perhaps the most well-known features of this temple among foreigners is its long Torii pathway (Red arch) located on the left-hand side of the temple and that it is surrounded by azalea bushes.

Note: If you want to enjoy a stunning view of the Tori tunnel surrounded by thousands of azalea flowers, the best time to visit this temple is in April.

Alongside Tokyo Midtown (coming soon on TokyoStreetView), Roppongi Hills is a new urban center designed to give a second life to the old and dirty Roppongi area. Completed in 2003, Roppongi Hills and its 238m high Mori Tower is far from having a glamorous past due to its revolving doors causing the death of a six-year-old child as well as 32 other non-lethal injuries. Roppongi Hills has also been at the center of further turmoil when Takafumi Horie, CEO of Livedoor was embroiled in fraud allegations in 2006. At this time both Takafumi Horie and part of his company were residing at Roppongi Hills.

Besides its rather unpleasant history, Roppongi Hills is famous for its shopping area, large selection of nice restaurants and its large esplanade where companies organize events all year long. It’s by no means the most exciting place to visit in Tokyo, however, Roppongi Hills does offer a stunning panoramic view of Tokyo from either its rooftop, the Sky Deck, or from the 52nd floor of the building.

Nakameguro – Tokyo 中目黒 – 4K Ultra HD

Nakameguro or Naka-Meguro, with its picturesque river, is a unique place that everyone has to come and visit at some point. A typical residential district by day, Nakameguro is by night and during the weekends, a fashionable place to have a drink and dinner with friends. It plays host to a huge range of restaurants, bars and small clubs where some Japanese indie artists come to jam.

If you are not crazy about clubbing or don’t like drinking much, make sure to visit Nakameguro during the cherry blossom period. You will definitely enjoy its stunningly beautiful river banks where you will find hundreds of cherry trees dressed in pink.

Today Nakameguro ranks as one of the “hippest” neighborhoods in Tokyo, its past has not always been so glamorous. Indeed towards the end of the World War 2, when the US dropped thousands of firebombs over Tokyo, a lot of people died after jumping into the river trying to escape the surrounding inferno. Many still believed at that time that the river was haunted and until 1980, the Nakameguro river was filled with industrial waste. Local residents wanted to be as far away as possible from the smelly, disgusting river.
It was only at the end of the 1980s that the Tokyo city council decided to clean up the place, and slowly but surely, Nakameguro and its river became a fashionable place to visit and live.
