Ukimido is located by the beautiful shores of Lake Biwako, just 30 minutes away from the center of Kyoto. Ukimido, is also known as the “floating temple hall” at Mangetsuji Temple, and is famous for being featured as one of the Eight Views of Omi, “wild geese returning home at Katata.”
Today’s structure of Ukimido is a recreation that was erected in 1937 and then underwent repairs in 1982, yet it fully retains the atmosphere of the original construction.
The legend has it that during the Heian period (794 – 1185) the Monk Genshin (also Enshin Sozu), every night saw a suspicious light from Mount Hieizana in Lake Biwa and decided one day to investigate this phenomenon. He discovered a beautiful, glowing golden Amida Butsu statue. He then later created Ukimido to house 1,000 replica statues as a token of worship.
