Kanchi-In Temple – Kyoto – 観智院

When visiting To-Ji temple, many may overlook its sub-temple, Kanchi-In. Located near the moat of Toji, Kanchi-In temple has been made famous thanks to its long history and beautiful gardens. Located in the temple is an ink painting drawn by the famous Miyamoto Musashi swordsman.

Kanchi-In was established in 1359 by Goho the scholar and author of the Toboki (The History of Toji Temple). Goho was a follower of the Shingon sect of Japanese Buddhism, founded by Kobo Daishi. Kanchi-In was meant as a study center and dormitory for Toji temple monks.

Unfortunately destroyed many times, the actual temple architecture dates from the Edo era. Its gorgeous stone garden and tea houses date from 1605 and have been classified as National Treasures.
