Located in Yamanashi prefecture just 30 minutes away from Mount Fuji, Kai Saruhashi is officially listed as a Place of Scenic Beauty of Japan. It is also ranked as one of Japan’s three most unique bridges alongside Kintai Bridge (that we previously covered here on TokyoStreetView) and the famous Shinkyo Bridge.
Meaning “Monkey Bridge”, Kai Saruhashi seems to be associated with a local legend in which monkeys bridged the chasm with their bodies so that a couple could cross Katsura river during the Nara period. It is also said in a later story that the original rickety plank structure was so precarious that only an agile monkey could cross it!
While there are no official record on when Kai Saruhashi was built, its unique design gives us a rough idea of its inception. Kai Saruhashi features the unique Hanebashi design, in which the bridge is supported by a series of cantilever beams set in the opposing cliff faces. This style of bridge building was mainly used during the Edo period in the mid-18th century.
